Online resources for our geometry class!

Hi everyone! J Today, I am going to talk about the prominence we can give to ICT resources in our geometric class with Primary School children.

First of all, it is necessary to say that it is extremely important that we find the adequate resources for our children. Thus, we have to discover what needs our students have in geometry (or in mathematics in general). After that, we should seek in different webpages to find the most useful tools to use with our class or with each student in particular.

As I see it, it would be really interesting the idea that the students say their difficulties and, starting from this, the teacher can look for concrete online resources to work on what they struggle with. However, it is also a positive idea to work the same contents at the same time with all of the pupils, because they could help each other and ask questions to their classmates. Therefore, the teacher can choose at any time the methodology she/he prefers according to the circumstances.

I have found some interesting links through which students can work with geometrical concepts. Some of those are the following:

Take a geometric photo!

Hi everyone! J During this second entry, I will discuss a personal educational experience I lived through with geometry. I decided to write an entry about it because this experience was extremely interesting and it left me a positive mark. Moreover, I strongly believe that the activity I am going to talk about can be carried out with children from Primary School (especially those who are in the third cycle).

Thus, when I was in the first year of Secondary School, my Math teacher organized a competition in which we had to take a picture related to geometry. In this way, the students would realize the importance of geometry and how we can find geometric figures everywhere.

With regard to the results, some people took pictures of different traffic signs; others took photos of the wheels of the cars and others of coins. In my case, I took a picture of a mosaic which is located in Frigiliana. It was made in honour of the three main religions: Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. I decided to take this photo, because for me, it seemed interesting to show (apart from geometry) the need for different cultures to live together in harmony and tolerance. This mosaic shows a cross, a star and several moons, which are represented through geometric figures.

Personally, I think that this activity is very useful to boost children’s creativity and imagination. I consider that it motivates them, makes them analyse reality in a deeper way and look for geometry in daily life. Moreover, for this task it is necessary to use ICT resources, which is also appealing for them.

In conclusion, I totally recommend this task because I think that it is a good way to learn significantly at the same time that children have a good time.

Welcome to my blog!

Hi everyone! J I welcome you to my new blog where I will post interesting things about geometry for the subject Geometry Didactics!

First of all, I would like to introduce myself and talk a little about me: my name is Laura Ramírez, I am 20 years old and I am studying to become a teacher of children between 6 and 12 years old (Primary Education). I want to be a teacher because I love to transmit what I know to other people and help them as much as possible. Furthermore, I would like to say that I've always loved Maths and it has always been one of my favourite subjects at school.

Finally, the last thing I would like to add is that I hope to learn many things in this subject and use this blog as a tool for reflection and learning. Thus, I will try to talk about resources, materials, activities and personal experiences related to geometry which seem attractive and useful to me.

See you guys in my next post!
